Ho Renting Guide

Renting in Ho

Ho is the capital of the Volta Region and home to Ho Technical University. Rents are generally lower than in Accra. Areas renters commonly look at include Ho Polytechnic Down, Barracks, the Water Works area, Police Depot and central Ho.

What rent is estimated to cost

From searches made online, chamber and hall and self contained rooms around Ho Polytechnic Down are estimated at around GH₵400 to GH₵700 a month, and newly built units at Barracks at around GH₵700 to GH₵800. Furnished single rooms along the Water Works road are estimated at around GH₵600 to GH₵800. Self contained apartments and executive units around Police Depot and central Ho are estimated at around GH₵800 to GH₵2,000. These are only estimates based on online searches. Real prices change often and can be different from what a landlord asks you directly.

Choosing the right area

Ho Polytechnic Down is popular with students and early career tenants because it is near the technical university, and it has some of the lowest rents. Barracks has newer buildings. Central Ho and the Police Depot area have the more expensive apartments. Before you choose, check how far the room is from your work or school and how you will travel there each day.

Household water supply

Water supply in Ho has been interrupted before. In January 2025, residents of Ho, Sokode and Sokode Gborgame went about three weeks without water after a pump broke at the Kpeve water treatment station, and one Sokode resident said the area had gone three years without reliable water. Ghana Water said the pump had been sent for repair and a new one would be ordered (Ghanaian Times, January 2025). We could not find a later report. Before you rent, ask the landlord how water reaches the room, how many days a week it flows, and whether there is a storage tank or a borehole. Ask neighbours too, because they will tell you how it really is.

Check the area before you rent

We could not find a recent official report naming flood prone areas in Ho, so do not assume any area is safe or unsafe. Visit the place, ideally after rain. Check whether water collects in the compound or on the road, and ask neighbours whether it floods in the rainy season. Ask whether the compound has a water storage tank, and whether the room has its own prepaid electricity meter or shares the compound meter.

Advance rent: what the law says and what happens

Under the Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), advance rent should not be more than six months. In practice, some listings in Ho advertise advance rent of a full year. If you are asked for more than six months, you can report it through the Rent Control Department complaints portal. This is general information, not legal advice.

Budget advice

Plan for more than the rent. Before you move in, expect to pay the advance, an agreement, and moving costs. After you move, expect water, electricity and transport. Decide your total budget first, including travel, then choose the area that fits it.

Stay safe

Never pay before you have seen the room and met the landlord. Make sure the person you pay is the owner. Read our guide on spotting rental scams and our guide on renting without an agent before you pay anything.
